In order to prepare for a stress free retirement, you need a good plan of action, one that is practical and effective. You also need to start early.
- Focus -Just as in the case of saving, retirement needs effort and long term commitment. Don’t think too much about how much you will save or when you will start to save, just do it! The best way is to start small and build up as you go, so that you will not be making painful sacrifices. Keep telling yourself that you need to save, in whatever form or size and you will eventually figure out a way to do this.
- Open an IRA - An Individual retirement account (IRA) is the most popular means of saving for retirement. The tax advantages are too good to miss. There are several different types of IRAs, so make sure you select one that suits your lifestyle and situation. You can easily get information about IRAs from the bank or any other financial institution. If you want to get a basic idea, try the resources offered on this website.
- Find out about your employer’s retirement plan- Some companies offer contributions to your retirement plan so it is worthwhile to get all the relevant details. Each company will have its own scheme so if you change jobs, talk with the Human Resources Manager about options available to you. Request for a summary plan description if you haven’t already been give one. This description will state your rights under the retirement plan.
- Take your required minimum payouts -Make sure that you take out the distributions of your IRA when you have reached the age of 70 ½ years. Failure to take the payouts will result in unnecessarily payments.
- Read your social security statement -You probably get a social security statement annually, a few weeks before your birthday. This needs to be kept as your personal record of the income on which you have paid social security taxes. There will also be a statement of estimated benefits you may receive based on your earnings. Retirement benefits also come under these benefits so find out what you are entitled to in the event of sudden disease, disability or death.
- Make a note of your spouse’s retirement plan -Some retirement plans extends their benefits to the spouse of the account holder. It is important for you to read and understand any waiver, lever or other benefit that arises from your spouse’s retirement plan, so that you don’t end up paying for the same provision twice.
